Cintas Announces Finalists for Canada’s Best Restroom

Public Voting is Now Underway in the 6th Annual Contest
Mississauga, ON – Each year, Cintas recognizes businesses that understand that there is a direct correlation between how a public restroom is cleaned, maintained and well-stocked and the impact this has on customer service and repeat business. “We received a wide variety of nominations this year, making our decision difficult.” said Leslie Molin, Cintas Canada’s Senior Marketing Manager. “It is exciting to see more and more businesses getting behind the message we strive to convey.” The Cintas survey editors have reviewed the nominations, and narrowed it down to the Final Five. Now it’s time for the public to decide which will be crowned “Canada’s Best Restroom.”
The finalists are determined based on five criteria, including cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. The winner of the Cintas Canada’s Best Restroom Contest will be revealed during a nationally publicized media event this fall, where the winner will be awarded $2,500 in Cintas facility services.

BNA Brewing Company & Eatery
Kelowna, British Columbia
The washroom at this brewery and restaurant transports visitors back in time. Located inside a historic building that was once home to The British North American Tobacco Company, the washroom maintains its heritage but has a modern, classy, and unforgettable look. The washroom was the vision of the restaurant owner herself, with no detail overlooked. As you enter the women’s washroom, you feel like you’ve stepped backstage at the theater, with bulb lights around the mirrors and beautiful exposed brick. One of the standout features includes faucets that come directly out of the mirrors. The upstairs unisex washroom maintains the same retro feel but builds off the playful atmosphere of the pub. Features include entrances on both sides and a three-faucet trough-style sink.
Renaissance Hotel
Edmonton, Alberta
Conveniently located in the Edmonton International Airport, this polished hotel washroom is a luxurious oasis for weary travelers. Black tiled walls, marble sinks and full-length mirrors are “sealed with a kiss” as Ruby Red lips are the statement throughout the washroom from wall art, to a full-size couch. Plush red stools, and red countertops provide a private space for visitors to freshen up with personal vanity mirrors. This one-of-a-kind washroom has the in-style traveler in mind, and will leave you feeling refreshed and pampered.
Tommyfield Gastro Pub
Calgary, Alberta
This UK-inspired pub is located in the heart of South Calgary’s new urban district, and a trip to the loo takes visitors “across the pond” in seconds. Each private stall is contained in one of the iconic red telephone booths, with photos of old England lining the walls. Whether it be enjoying a fulfilling dinner downstairs or catching the game upstairs, a trip to the washrooms truly tops off this double-decker experience.
Bank and Baron Pub
Calgary, Alberta
Built in 1931, this reclaimed Bank of Nova Scotia is more than a pub; it is an important piece of Alberta’s history. Featuring original details such as the ceiling, mouldings and many of the light fixtures complemented by modern touches, the Bank and Baron boasts unique art deco architecture. Guests find a fanciful experience in the washroom, with dazzling gold-trimmed mirrors against shining silver leaf wallpaper. Dark wooded stalls and marbled countertops are the perfect accent to top off this stylish trip to the restroom.
1000 Islands Duty Free
Lansdowne, Ontario
Travellers leaving Canada and heading back to the United States often make this washroom their last stop before crossing the border. This Duty Free Shop gives customers a “swell farewell” with their clean and inviting restroom, that’s incredibly well designed. The store boasts great deals on merchandise and a friendly spot for families to freshen up on their way home. It’s even advertised on their website.

Longwood Gardens is America’s Best Restroom

Popular Public Garden Captures Victory in Cintas’ 13th Annual Contest

Kennett Square, PA/Cincinnati, OH – November 19, 2014 – America voted and decided that Longwood Gardens has the best public restroom in all the land. After viewing its awe-inspiring “green wall” and eco-friendly design, the online public selected the venue’s restroom over a strong field of finalists in the 13th annual contest.

As the most visited public garden in America, Longwood Gardens is renowned for its grand horticulture displays. Now, the distinctive restrooms have become a national icon too. Along with the “green wall” outside the restrooms, visitors find etched translucent glass inside that provides natural light, reduces electricity and minimizes the need for light fixtures.

As the 2014 winner, Longwood Gardens also receives a $2,500 credit to spend on Cintas services like restroom cleaning and supplies, cleaning chemicals or wet mops for their restroom floors. All three top vote getters win a complimentary Deep Clean of their restroom (valued up to $500).

“We’re excited to announce Longwood Gardens as the 2014 Cintas’ America’s Best Restroom,” said Cintas’ Senior Marketing Manager John Engel. “The team at Longwood has proven it understands the value of a restroom that’s creative and memorable for guests.”

Engel visited Longwood Gardens on Wednesday, November 19 at 10 am ET to present Chief Marketing Officer Marnie Conley with the 2014 award.

In the contest, which attracted thousands of online votes, America chose Bowl Plaza in Lucas, Kansas as the No. 2 place “to go.” The Fabulous Fox Theater in St. Louis, Missouri took 3rd place.

“We are so pleased to receive the America’s Best Restroom award,” said Conley. “Longwood Gardens is about beautiful horticulture, being a good steward to our environment, and providing an extraordinary experience for our more than one million guests each year.”

As for the restroom’s famous green wall? “The wall has become a ‘must-see’ destination for our guests, many of whom may have never seen a green wall before and are curious about how we care for it,” said Conley. “It’s the only restroom with its own docents!”

The 2014 contest attracted nominations from a wide range of businesses, including restaurants, a retail complex, an outdoor restroom along a running trail and a children’s toy store. Cintas selected the ten finalists based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements.

Cintas Announces Finalists for “Canada’s Best Restroom”

Public Voting Now Open in 5th Annual Contest

Mississauga, ON – July 30, 2014 – The Cintas Canada’s Best Restroom Contest is back for a fifth year of fancy, funky and always functional washrooms. For the moments when you’ve really “gotta go” or just need a place to freshen up, Cintas understands the importance of a clean, well-maintained washroom. Our team of survey editors has reviewed the nominations for the best washroom facilities in the nation, and it’s time for the public to choose which of the five finalists will be crowned “Canada’s Best Restroom.”

Last year’s winner was Valleyview Shell Super Station, a gas station in northern Alberta. Their victory proved that Canada’s Best Restroom can be found anywhere! To view photos of previous winners, visit www.bestrestroom.com/canada and click on Hall of Fame.

Voting for this year’s contest begins now! The public is invited to show its support by casting an online ballot for their favourite washroom at www.bestrestroom.com/canada now through October as the top five compete to secure the most votes and earn the title of “Cintas Canada’s Best Restroom.”

The contest website takes visitors on a photographic tour of each facility and encourages the public to choose their favourite. The winner of the 5th Annual Cintas Canada’s Best Restroom Contest will be revealed during a nationally publicized media event this fall, where the winner will be awarded $2,500 in Cintas facility services.

2014 Finalists for Cintas Canada’s Best Restroom Contest:

Patria
Toronto, Ontario

In sharp contrast to Spanish-inspired brown and red hues that string the dining room walls at Patria, the washroom features clean white marble from ceiling to floor, and simple elegant fixtures. Golden faucets and mirror accents give the washroom a regal atmosphere, adding to the overall European experience. Restaurant patrons can’t wait to take a seat on one of Patria’s thrones, fit for a king (or queen).

Calgary Zoo
Calgary, Alberta

Amongst giraffes, hippos, lions and gorillas sit the Destination Africa washrooms at the Calgary Zoo. The park takes visitors across the globe, from Africa to Eurasia, with lavatories to match in each locale. After a trek through the tropical rainforest and a stroll through the savannah, guests head to the hut to clean up and get out of the African sun. Each circular hut serves as a loo, complete with wall-to-wall tribal décor for a true glimpse into African culture.

Planet Hollywood
Niagara Falls, Ontario

The glamourous décor of the Planet Hollywood restaurant reminds guests of their favourite Hollywood classics, and the experience continues with a visit to their flashy washroom. The ladies’ room mirrors are “framed” with a pair of giant, hot pink, zebra print sunglasses, turning every woman into a star with a glance at her reflection. Meanwhile, in the men’s room, guys are doing a double take when they see what’s staring back at them. Cobalt blue sharks open wide to reveal mirrors between their terrifying teeth. Both loos are lined with black and white tile and glass-tiled stall doors. These functional facilities aren’t just for show, but they’re definitely ready for a close up!

Shaw Club Hotel & Spa
Niagara on the Lake, Ontario

Style and radiance come together in this lavish loo. Upon entering the ladies’ room, guests are greeted by a modern glass infinity sink and simple stainless steel fixtures. The stalls feature large glass doors which fog up for privacy when the door is locked! Here’s the science behind it: sandwiched between the two panels of glass is a mixture of polymer and liquid crystals. A constant electrical current keeps the crystals in line and the glass transparent. But when the door handle is locked, the current is stopped, the crystals fall, and the glass looks clouded. A picture of sophistication, Shaw Club and Hotel & Spa delivers five-star style with every flush.

Vancouver Airport (YVR)
Vancouver, British Columbia

Located in the C-Pier, Domestic Terminal of YVR, travelers find a clean, modern place to freshen up during their journeys. The washroom walls are covered in shades of blue, red, and yellow mosaic tiles and waveshaped blue flooring winds down the curved corridor leading guests to their choice of bathroom stalls. White tile surrounds the hands-free sinks and towel dispensers, creating a cohesive and modern atmosphere that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Cintas created the Best Restroom Contest in 2010 to honour businesses across Canada that combine good hygiene with functionality and exceptional style in their public restrooms. “This contest is fun but it also conveys a critical message that restroom hygiene matters – for good health and good business,” said Senior Marketing Manager, Leslie Molin.

Varsity Theater is America’s Best Restroom

Historic Minneapolis Landmark Captures the Crown in the 12th Annual Cintas’ America’s Best Restroom Contest

Minneapolis, MN/Cincinnati, OH – November 19, 2013 – America voted and decided that Varsity Theater has the best restroom in all the land. After viewing its quirky design and furnishings, the online public selected the venue’s restroom over a strong field of finalists in the 12th annual contest.

What made the Varsity Theater the 2013 King of Thrones? It starts with the unique décor: ornate mirrors and curvy brick walls. Distinctive features include sinks operated by foot pedal and a co-ed hand wash area. Bartenders even serve drinks into the restroom on a back counter. For many Twin Cities residents, the restroom at the concert hall is as popular as the artists on stage.

“The team at Varsity Theater understands the value of a well-maintained and memorable restroom,” said Cintas’ Senior Marketing Manager John Engel. “What they have is more than a creative concept. It’s an effective business tool that keeps people coming back.”

Engel visited Varsity Theater on Tuesday, November 19 to present owner Jason McLean with the 2013 award. The theater has now secured its place in the Cintas’ America’s Best Restroom Hall of Fame.

In the contest, which attracted thousands of online votes, America chose Portland’s Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade’s restroom the No. 2 place “to go.” Public Glass Bathrooms on the Square in Sulphur Springs, Texas took 3rd place.

Varsity Theater, formerly The University Theater, was one of the last vaudeville houses in Minneapolis and hosted minstrel shows, comedians and screenings of early silent films.

“The best restroom award is truly an honor,” said Jason McLean, Varsity Theater owner and general manager. “In an era when designers are so creative with public restrooms, we consider this award a tremendous achievement.”

As for the restroom’s fantasy-themed design, “I ask the audience to spend a short time immersed in a make-believe world, leaving their cares behind and yet in a social way,” McLean said.

The 2013 contest attracted nominations from a wide range of businesses, including restaurants, a hotel, an ice cream parlor, an art museum and a classic arcade. The ten finalists were selected based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements.

The 2013 finalists:
